The Value of a Word

OK...so I am trying to learn how to use this camera and apparently got my photos turned sideways.....but regardless, the artwork has "value" and needed to be seen.  The 8th graders were using the power of words to make a visual statement in this piece of artwork.  They had to choose two words that had value to them or about them.  Next they created a grid and then used their pencils to work with shades and tints of gray....or values of gray.  The end results were beautiful monochromatic statements about the value of a word.

Giacometti Wire Sculptures

7th Graders have been working on a figure study unit this nine weeks.  They have created cardboard mannequins, drawings of people in motion and have now finished sculptures that are inspired by Alberto Giacometti's skinnybronze figures.  They used wire, pipe cleaners, paper and tape to create their figures and once completed the sculptures had to be balanced and free-standing on their painted base.

We Can't See In Here....

8th graders had a great time working on blind contour drawings. The art room was filled with lots of giggles and shrieks of laughter as the students had to draw their friends without looking at their papers....and without an eraser. This is a LOT harder than it sounds.  After drawing, the students used watercolors to paint their designs.  The finished results were colorful, abstract....and oh, so distorted.  Picasso would be proud!

Love this piece by Miranda!
