Sad Day.....

Just heard sad news that one of my former student's mother passed.  Tammy Escobar was such a dear person and gave us many hours of her time volunteering in the art room while her son attended North Stanly Middle School.  My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, especially to Cameron.

Rest in Peace Tammy....
Heaven has gained an angel.

African masks

7th graders studied African mask designs in the 2nd 9 weeks....these are paper pulp relief masks that the kids built and are painting.

Drew....he usually had more paint on himself than his artwork!

It's a Jungle...or a Rain Forest In the Art Room!

No, I'm not calling my students animals.....well, maybe sometimes, but it was definitely an adventure watching these rain forest drawings emerge.  Here are some of my 6th grade students who are working on their landscape drawings of the South American rain forest.  These pieces were explosions of the elements of art and principles of design....space, line, texture, color, value, perspective.....these little landscapes have it all.  The details and colors are amazing.  So proud of their efforts and hard work.

Cup of Joe from Annette Lowder

Meet Logan....his aunt, Annette Lowder is a local professional potter and sent me this amazing coffee mug....Logan knows I need my morning caffeine.  You can see more of her work at both her home studio and at The Falling Rivers Gallery in Albemarle.  Thank you so much Annette for sharing your talent with the students....they love the honey bees decorating my mug....and with me!

Megan Hart - Senior Teaching Cadet

Please help me welcome Megan Hart, NSHS senior teaching cadet to our classroom.  We were lucky to have Megan the second 9 weeks during our 6th grade exploratory....and now for the remainder of the year she will be helping out in the art room during the 7th grade.  She's a jack of all trades, assistant teacher, artist-in-residence, extra set of hands, and an amazing artist.  Here she is working on some school decor!

Cooperative Kandinsky

I was trying to figure out how to work in some cooperative and inclusive learning within our study of artists and art elements and decided on Kandinsky.   I love his play with the elements of art and after learning about his life, style, and love of classical music we started a painting of our own, Kandinsky Style!  Mrs. Noah, our music teacher (and NSMS 2013 Teacher of the year) helped by suggesting classical music by the composer, Debussy to get in the Kandinsky style painting mood.

Each student started painting with black only...focusing on lines, patterns, and shape....and thena fter about 5 minutes they had to switch places with another student and paint on a different paper.  The looks on their faces were priceless when they realized what was happening...and the results are amazing!

Manual labor....just clean fun

Well it's the end of the semester and our room is a disaster...unfortunately we don't have a professional cleaning service for our classroom....but give a kid some shaving cream and they will work up a sweat cleaning tables and making them sparkle.....This was the best few dollars I have spent so far this year on school supplies....two cans of Barbasol and you would have thought I had given them a bag full of money!  Free manual labor, and enthusiasm to go with it.  So wanna know how to get your kids to help clean up at the house???   Hand them some shaving cream and let them have some clean fun!

All My Friends are Flakes

I'm a little behind in updating my blog but wanted to share these pictures showing 8th grade students working on their clay snowmen sculptures.  The finished results are amazing and I'll make sure to post some of these soon!

Easy Going Landon has mad skills in snowman construction.

The girls are busy dressing their snowmen for the coming frost.

Hannah K....busy adding details to "Frosty".

Gotta find more snow and fast!

Mason's snowman is one "smooth" character.
